We don’t typically do tours, but I wanted to see as much as we could, and the tour seemed to be the best way to do that considering the small, windy roads and the fact that a number of things are off-limits to the general public. We picked Overlord tours based on our typical internet research and could not have been happier. We took the Omaha / Band of Brothers – Full Day Tour, where our tour guide Oliver had story after story for us as we drove the countryside visiting sites, churches and monuments related to the Normandy Landings. There were many stories that we had heard before and some that we didn’t. We got to see battlefields, museums and breathtaking scenery…well worth the trip and we’d both do it again.
Some of the things we got to see
- Omaha Beach [Pictures]
- The American Cemetery of Colleville [Pictures] – One of the most humbling places we have ever been – honestly even more so than Arlington National Cemetery (because all of the headstones here were for a single battle) or Gettysburg (since it does not have the same cemetery layout)
- Pointe du Hoc [Pictures]
- Sainte Mere Eglise
- Marmion’s Farm
- Brécourt Manor [Pictures]
- Angoville au Plain [Pictures]- The story here is astounding
- Carentan
- The Major Richard Winters statue [Pictures]
