Museums like this are a blessing and a curse. So much to see but so many people to look through.

Why are there so many people that feel the need to rush to the “popular” works in a museum only to take a photo or, even worse, a video of it only to rush off to find the next popular work? Yes, when you visit MOMA you want to see Jackson Pollock One: Number 31 but that does not mean you should pass up the wonderful works of Clyfford Still, Frank Lloyd Wright or Felix Gonzalez-Torres (who doesn’t like free candy?)
Maybe, instead of rushing to just the “popular” pieces people should find something that does not make sense or isn’t something they typically like and spend a little time with it. Maybe read a little about it, listen to the audio guide or ask a docent to explain the work. After that, go back and take a second look at the work, maybe talk to another visitor about it. It’s OK to not like it or walk away confused, that’s part of the joy of art.
Who knows, maybe this makes the details of One: Number 31 all the more enjoyable and maybe, just maybe you find that you want to visit the Clyfford Still museum because his work hits you just right….
